Evander Holyfield Announces Surprise Comeback: "I Still Got It"

McCall's return to action comes long after many of his contemporaries have hung up their gloves. Larry Holmes, known for his devastating jab and for being the only man to stop Muhammad Ali inside the distance, retired in 2002 with an impressive 69 wins from 75 fights. Lennox Lewis, who avenged his loss to McCall and left the sport on top in 2003, hasn't looked back since.

But "The Atomic Bull" isn't following their lead. In 2024, McCall has already notched two victories. He dispatched Stacy Frazier inside two rounds and followed that up with a stoppage win over Gary Cobia in February. These wins have earned McCall the distinction of being the oldest former heavyweight champion to win a fight.

McCall's comeback trail doesn't stop there. He's set to face James Tanksley, an undefeated but untested 52-year-old, on April Fools' Day in Nashville, Tennessee.

This late-career resurgence brings to mind McCall's glory days. In 1994, he shocked the boxing world by claiming the WBC belt from Lennox Lewis. He followed that up with a successful title defense against Larry Holmes in 1995.

While McCall's recent wins have turned heads, many fans would prefer to see him retire for good. His continued presence in the ring stands in stark contrast to the underwhelming and controversial effort of Mike Tyson in his 2023 fight against Jake Paul.

As McCall gears up for his next bout, the boxing world watches with a mix of fascination and concern. The "Atomic Bull" seems determined to keep fighting, even as he approaches his seventh decade.
