Floyd Mayweather might step back into the ring for a professional boxing match. The retired champion is talking about a comeback, possibly for a world title fight. This is a big change from the exhibition matches he's been doing lately.
Mayweather hung up his gloves in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record. He had a long career from 1996 to 2017, winning world titles in five weight classes. He beat some of the best, including Oscar De La Hoya, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, and Manny Pacquiao. His last pro fight was against UFC star Conor McGregor, which Mayweather won.
Now, there's talk about a rematch with Manny Pacquiao. They fought in 2015, and Mayweather won by unanimous decision. But both fighters were past their best years then.
Pacquiao's got a big fight coming up. He's taking on Mario Barrios for the WBC Welterweight World Title on the weekend of July 15, 2025. At 46, Pacquiao could become the oldest welterweight champion if he wins.
Lance Pugmire reports that Mayweather plans to be at the Pacquiao-Barrios fight. He says:
"Conversations are already happening … if Manny wins, this (rematch) could be worth billions"
For this rematch to happen, a few things need to fall into place. Pacquiao has to beat Barrios first. Mayweather needs to say he's definitely interested. And he might need a special ranking from the WBC.
Pacquiao's hinted he'll keep fighting if he beats Barrios. He's even suggested Mayweather would be too "scared" for a rematch.
Mayweather's been busy with exhibition matches to make money. But this could be his chance to get back into real competition.
