Former WBA Super Middleweight champion George Groves shared his thoughts on the upcoming bout. Groves beat Eubank Jr. in February 2018, winning by unanimous decision in a WBA Super Middleweight title fight that was also the World Boxing Super Series semi-final.
Groves controlled that fight with his jab and landed some big shots. Eubank got cut from an accidental head clash, and Groves fought through a dislocated shoulder in the final round to secure the win on all three judges' scorecards.
Since then, Eubank Jr. has had some ups and downs. He's beaten James DeGale, Matt Korobov, Liam Williams, and Liam Smith. But he also got knocked out by Smith in their first meeting.
In a recent interview with Betway, Groves shared his thoughts on the upcoming Eubank Jr. vs. Benn fight:
"It's gonna be a huge fight. It's not, it's not as interesting as in who's going to win and where does the winner go as it was, obviously, two years ago."
Groves thinks Benn will bring excitement to the ring:
"I think Connor Ben can't help but be entertaining. He wants to have a fight. He's desperate to have a fight. He'll be desperate to take Eubank's head off."
The former champ noted that both fighters have had a tough couple of years. Eubank Jr. doesn't look as strong as he used to and seemed to struggle with his weight in his last fight in Saudi Arabia. Benn has been cleared to box but hasn't had a competitive fight in a while.
Groves sees this match as more about entertainment than advancing either fighter's career:
"I think it's more of Netflix Jake Paul type of fight than anything else. It's pure entertainment."
Despite his criticism, Groves said he's looking forward to the fight and plans to follow and cover it.
Interestingly, Chris Eubank Sr. has said he's sure the fight won't happen, even though it's booked and signed for April 26.
This match has been in the works for a while. It was originally scheduled two years ago but got called off when Benn tested positive for a banned substance. Now, fans will finally get to see these two settle their family rivalry in the ring.
