Boxing’s two best ever amateurs meet in the professional ranks on December 9th, when Vasyl Lomachenko defends his WBO World Super-Featherweight Title against Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Madison Square Garden Theater in New York hosts the mouth-watering bout, which is live in the U.K. and Ireland on BoxNation.

Four Olympic gold medals will be represented in what is potentially the best skills match-up in the sport. Lomachenko (9-1, 7 KOs) won gold for Ukraine in 2008 and 2012, while Cuba’s Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs) lifted his medals in 2000 and 2004.

In June 2014, Lomachenko won the WBO Featherweight crown in only his third professional contest. A year later, he became the fastest boxer to win a World Title at two weights after destroying Roman Martinez in five rounds.

As an amateur, the Ukrainian wizard’s record was 396-1, with the sole loss avenged twice. Since turning pro he has amazed boxing fans with his exciting style and technical brilliance. His last three foes, Nicholas Walters, Jason Sosa and Miguel Marriaga, have all either quit or were pulled out by their corners due to the sustained beatings.

Rigondeaux is moving up two weight divisions from Super-Bantamweight, where the weight limit is 122 pounds. ‘El Chacal’ is regarded as one of the best defensive boxers on the globe, known for slick counter-punching, speed and pinpoint accuracy.

Due to his tricky style and incredible talent he has struggled to tie-down big fights, so the Cuban has only fought four times in the last three years. The southpaw’s most notable scalp came against Nonito Doniare back in April 2013, but now he faces the toughest test of his eight-year career.

Fans had been calling for Lomachenko to face Rigondeaux for a long time, and on December 9th they get to witness two of the world’s very best square off in a bona fide superfight of the lower weight classes.
