One of boxing’s most unusual crossover matchups is headed to Egypt on May 23, when undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) is scheduled to meet Rico Verhoeven (1-0, 1 KO). Verhoeven has only one pro boxing bout on his record, but the Dutch star is widely regarded as one of the top kickboxers of his era after spending the past decade as a centerpiece of Glory.

The faceoff is official, and now the intrigue around Usyk-Verhoeven has only grown. The May 23 event in Egypt will spotlight a reigning heavyweight boxing champion against a decorated kickboxing name in a matchup that is likely to draw major curiosity from American fight fans, even if the competitive balance looks clear on paper. In the U.S., crossover fights usually get attention when there’s either real danger or real spectacle. This one leans heavily into the second category.

For Usyk, the assignment is less about survival and more about maintaining momentum and protecting his status as the division’s standard-bearer. Any dominant showing would only reinforce the idea that he remains the most technically complete heavyweight in the sport. For Verhoeven, the stakes are different. He has to prove that elite striking in kickboxing can translate, at least in part, against a world-class boxer under boxing rules. That is a massive ask against a fighter with Usyk’s footwork, ring IQ, and ability to control pace.

The event also carries meaningful undercard implications. Hamzah Sheeraz (22-0-1, 18 KOs) is set to face Alem Begic (29-0-1, 23 KOs) for the vacant WBO super middleweight title, while heavyweight contender Richard Torrez (14-0, 12 KOs) meets Frank Sanchez (25-1, 18 KOs) in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator after their originally planned May meeting was postponed by Sanchez’s injury.

If Usyk handles business the way most expect, attention will quickly shift back to the biggest available heavyweight fights. If Verhoeven makes it competitive, even briefly, he could turn a novelty bout into one of the more talked-about combat sports stories of the year.
