Oleksandr Usyk's place among boxing's all-time greats has sparked debate. The undisputed heavyweight champion's recent win over Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium has only added fuel to the fire.
Former three-division world champion Duke McKenzie thinks Usyk deserves a spot in the top 20 heavyweights of all time. But he's not sure exactly where the Ukrainian fighter ranks.
McKenzie told Boxing Social:
"He deserves to be among the top 20 heavyweights of all time, but we don't know where he would be ranked."
The ex-champ believes several past boxers would have given Usyk trouble. He mentioned legends like Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, and Evander Holyfield.
"They were combined hitters. They were huge. They were real athletes."
McKenzie even suggested that Ray Mercer, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist, would have caused problems for Usyk.
Some might argue that Usyk's left-handed stance and movement would have made these past champions nervous. But McKenzie stood firm on his stance.
"That's what I'm saying, he's in the top 20!"
Usyk has already beaten Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury twice. Now, he's been ordered to defend his undisputed crown against New Zealand's Joseph Parker. The date and place for this fight haven't been set yet.
If Usyk wins against Parker, it could boost his ranking among the greats. But there's another option on the table. Tyson Fury has called for a third fight after Usyk beat Dubois. Fury thinks he should have won their previous matches and wants another shot.
If Usyk chooses to fight Fury instead, he'd have to give up his WBO title. It's a tough choice that could shape his legacy in the sport.
No matter what happens next, Usyk has already made his mark in boxing history. He's the undisputed heavyweight champion and has beaten some of the best in the business. The debate about his place among the all-time greats will likely continue for years to come.
