Tony Bellew thinks Joe Calzaghe would have beaten Carl Froch if they had fought. The former cruiserweight champion shared his opinion on the 'Froch on Fighting' show, weighing in on a debate that's been going on for years.
Calzaghe and Froch never got to face each other in the ring. When Froch was just starting out, Calzaghe was already a big name in the super middleweight division. By the time Froch made his mark, Calzaghe had moved up to light heavyweight and became a two-weight world champion.
Calzaghe ended his career undefeated with 46 wins. He beat some big names like Jeff Lacy, Bernard Hopkins, and Roy Jones Jr. Froch and Calzaghe have argued for years about why they never fought and who would have won if they did.
On the Froch on Fighting show, Bellew told Froch:
"I don't think you beat him, mate, as great as you were, I don't think you beat him. I hate to say it cause I don't like backing against friends. It's a nightmare for anyone mate."
Froch asked if he would have been outclassed. Bellew replied:
"No one would ever be able to outclass you cause you'd always be in their face. You faced the best super middleweight of our era and you weren't outclassed against Andre Ward and he is head and shoulders against anybody who even comes close."
Bellew's not the only one who thinks Calzaghe would have won. Andre Ward, who beat Froch, said Calzaghe's quick feet and high punch count would have been too much for Froch to handle.
Froch was known for his toughness and heart in the ring. But Calzaghe's slick footwork and ability to throw lots of punches might have given him the edge. We'll never know for sure, but it's fun to imagine what might have happened if these two British boxing greats had met in their primes.
