Canelo recently announced he'll face Scull on May 3, 2025, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He's also set to fight Crawford on September 13, 2025, in Las Vegas. These choices have left the Benavidez camp feeling frustrated and vocal about their disappointment.
Jose Benavidez Sr. didn't hold back when he spoke to Fight Hub TV about Canelo's decisions. He said:
"They are making a circus here, and Canelo does what he wants. Good for him. The organizers allow it. It doesn't matter what people say. They are going to do it anyway."
Benavidez Sr. questioned Scull's credentials and recognition in the boxing world. He expressed his surprise at the choice:
"Scull, what the hell has he accomplished? Who is Scull? I didn't even know who Scull was."
The criticism didn't stop there. Benavidez Sr. also took aim at the Crawford fight, pointing out concerns about Crawford's recent performance against Israil Madrimov and the significant weight jump from 154 to 168 pounds.
He summed up his thoughts on Canelo's 2025 plans:
"So I see two easy fights for him [Canelo], and that's what they want. People allow it, and organizations allow it. So he's going to keep doing it. Why not? As he says, he can do whatever he wants, and he's doing what he wants."
This latest outburst adds to the ongoing tension between the Benavidez family and Canelo. David Benavidez has been pushing for a fight with Canelo for a while now, but an agreement hasn't materialized.
The Benavidez camp's frustration extends beyond Canelo to the boxing organizations. They feel these bodies are letting top fighters like Canelo pick and choose their opponents too freely.
As the debate rages on, fans will have to wait and see how Canelo's 2025 fights play out and if a showdown with David Benavidez will ever come to fruition.
