Canelo Alvarez and Gervonta Davis want to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. The two boxing stars, with a combined 92 victories between them, have named the retired champion as their dream opponent.
Alvarez, the pound-for-pound star with a 64-2-0 record, still feels the sting of his first professional loss to Mayweather back in September 2013. He told DAZN Boxing he'd love another shot at the undefeated legend.
"Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it's not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn."
Canelo's not letting that old loss slow him down, though. He's gearing up to defend his undisputed super-middleweight titles against William Scull in May.
Davis, who's years behind Canelo but still making waves as a potential future Hall of Famer, shares the same dream. On the A Safe Place podcast, he said his ideal matchup would be "Me vs. Floyd [Mayweather]."
The history between Davis and Mayweather runs deep. Mayweather guided Davis for years before they had a bitter falling out. Now, Davis is looking ahead to a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. after their first fight ended in a controversial draw.
Mayweather, the 47-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan, retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record after beating MMA star Conor McGregor. Since then, he's kept busy with exhibition bouts against Logan Paul, Tenshin Nasukawa, and Aaron Chalmers.
While both Canelo and Davis dream of facing Mayweather, they're still focused on the here and now. They continue to pick opponents from today's crop of fighters, cementing their own legacies in the sport.
Mayweather's unlikely to come out of retirement for anything more than exhibitions. But his impact on boxing remains clear, with two of the sport's biggest stars still seeing him as the ultimate challenge.
