Lennox Lewis thinks Anthony Joshua has dodged Deontay Wilder for years. The former undisputed heavyweight champ shared his thoughts in a recent chat with IFL TV.
Joshua's boxing record stands out in today's heavyweight scene. He's beaten some big names like Wladimir Klitschko, Alexander Povetkin, and Dillian Whyte. He even went toe-to-toe with current top heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk.
But Lewis reckons Joshua's missed a trick by not fighting Wilder. He praised Tyson Fury for being more open to tough fights.
"He needs that challenge. He's up for challenges. When Deontay [Wilder] came over and challenged Anthony Joshua and Anthony Joshua didn't take the challenge, [Fury] flew over to America and challenged Deontay. He's always up for a challenge like that."
The Joshua-Wilder fight has been on the cards for years. Back in 2017, their teams met to talk about a unification bout. Joshua held the IBF and WBA belts, while Wilder had the WBC title.
Joshua then snagged the WBO belt from Joseph Parker, and talks fired up again. There were reports of multi-million dollar offers, but they couldn't seal the deal.
Things got complicated when Joshua lost to Andy Ruiz Jr and went for an immediate rematch. Meanwhile, Wilder started his trilogy with Tyson Fury, losing his WBC belt in the second fight.
In 2022, both camps tried to make the fight happen again. The plan was for both guys to have a couple of fights first. Joshua beat Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou, but Wilder lost to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.
Now, Joshua's coming off a loss to Daniel Dubois. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, says AJ might rematch Dubois or finally face Tyson Fury.
The heavyweight boxing scene keeps changing, and fans are left wondering if they'll ever see Joshua and Wilder square off in the ring.
