Jake Paul keeps the boxing world talking after his win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The YouTuber-turned-fighter has called out several big names, including former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter, has mentioned the possibility of this match-up. But Joshua's trainer, Ben Davison, doesn't think it's likely to happen. He compared it to the Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Conor McGregor fight, which many saw as a money-making spectacle.
Davison told reporters:
"I said the other day, do you remember when Floyd boxed McGregor? He was like, 'I'm robbing a bank'. I think he came out in a ski mask. If they're going to pay [Joshua] ridiculous money to do that, then it's going to spike a bit of interest. We'll see what they're willing to do. Do I think it will happen? Probably not."
The Mayweather-McGregor bout was Mayweather's 50th and final fight. He won by TKO against the UFC star who had no professional boxing experience. Many viewed it as a cash grab rather than a competitive match.
A fight between Joshua and Paul could follow a similar pattern. Joshua's experience and size advantage mean he could likely knock out Paul with ease. But questions remain about whether the contract would allow such a one-sided contest.
This potential match-up fits into a broader trend of crossover fights between established boxers and celebrities or MMA fighters. These events often generate huge paydays for the participants, even if they don't always deliver competitive action.
For now, Paul's strategy of calling out high-profile fighters keeps him in the spotlight. Whether these challenges lead to actual fights remains to be seen. But in the current boxing landscape, where spectacle often trumps sport, nothing can be ruled out entirely.
