Danny Jacobs Reveals Surprising Truth About Canelo And Golovkin: "I Never Expected This"

Jacobs faced GGG in March 2017 for the unified WBC, WBA, and IBF middleweight titles. The fight went the full twelve rounds, marking the first time in GGG's pro career that an opponent lasted the distance. Before this bout, Golovkin had stopped 23 opponents in a row inside the scheduled distance.

Two years later, in 2019, Jacobs went up against Canelo Alvarez. That fight also went the full twelve rounds, with Canelo coming out on top by decision.

When asked about his toughest opponent, Jacobs didn't hesitate to name GGG. In his interview with DAZN Boxing, he explained:

"Honestly I think my toughest opponent was GGG, out of both the guys he was a stronger guy and mentally he put that pressure on you to where physically you're like it's just so much to take on in one fight, he was a great champion, I believe I got the victory but nonetheless it was a great fight."

Jacobs pointed out that GGG's strength and mental pressure made him a more challenging opponent. He felt the physical toll of facing Golovkin was more significant compared to his bout with Canelo.

It's worth noting that both Canelo and GGG are considered among the greatest fighters of their generation. Canelo currently holds the undisputed super-middleweight championship, while GGG is a former unified WBC, WBA, and IBF middleweight champion.

The two boxing stars have their own storied rivalry. They've faced each other three times, with their first meeting in 2017 ending in a controversial split decision draw. Most observers thought GGG should have won that fight. Canelo won their second encounter in 2018, claiming the unified WBC and WBA world middleweight titles.

Their third and final bout took place in 2022, where Canelo put on a dominant performance to defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship.

Despite Canelo's success against GGG and his current status in boxing, Jacobs' experience in the ring led him to rate Golovkin as the tougher opponent. His assessment adds an interesting perspective to the ongoing discussions about these two boxing greats.
