Manny Pacquiao is getting ready to step back into the ring. The former eight-division champion will face Mario Barrios on July 19 in Las Vegas, marking his return to professional boxing after four years away.
At 46 years old, Pacquiao's comeback has raised eyebrows in the boxing world. His last official fight was a loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021, with his most recent victory coming against Keith Thurman in 2019 by split decision.
The Filipino boxing legend will square off against Barrios, who's 16 years his junior. This age gap has sparked concerns about potential health risks for Pacquiao. Former promoter Bob Arum and businessman Eddie Hearn are among those who've voiced their worries.
Oscar de la Hoya, a former champion and promoter who once faced Pacquiao in the ring, shared his thoughts on the comeback. In a recent interview, he said:
"He'll do fine. He's experienced. He has the power that never leaves you, but Pacquiao, you're 46 years old. You have to remember that, so give your body a break (...) The rest between training and sparring sessions is now Manny Pacquiao's best friend. I'm a little worried about the speed, because I think Barrios is a fighter."
De la Hoya pointed out some positives in Pacquiao's favor, including his experience and power. However, he stressed the importance of rest and recovery given Pacquiao's age. The former champion admitted he doesn't follow Barrios' career closely and didn't make a prediction for the fight.
Despite the controversy surrounding his comeback, Pacquiao seems confident about the challenge ahead. Barrios' youth will likely play a significant role in the bout, but 'PacMan' has faced tough odds before.
As July 19 approaches, all eyes will be on Las Vegas to see if the Filipino legend can turn back the clock one more time.
