Late replacement Zak Chelli (17-3-1, 9 KO) stepped in for injured interim WBO champion Callum Smith and delivered a major upset Saturday in Manchester, stopping former two-time world champion David Morrell (12-2, 9 KO) on the undercard of Daniel Dubois vs. Fabio Wardley.

What looked like a routine showcase for David Morrell turned into one of the weekend’s biggest boxing surprises. Fighting Saturday night in Manchester on the Daniel Dubois-Fabio Wardley undercard, late-notice replacement Zak Chelli weathered long stretches of adversity before stopping Morrell in the 10th round.

For most of the fight, Morrell appeared in control. He established his jab early, circled well, and dictated the tempo with his movement. Chelli stayed patient, though, and kept looking for the same answer: a looping right hand over the top. That shot finally changed the fight in the ninth, when Chelli badly hurt Morrell and flipped the momentum.

Morrell survived the round, but his body language changed in the 10th. He boxed cautiously behind the jab as if he believed he had already banked enough rounds, yet he was no longer fully responding to Chelli’s pressure. After another hard right hand snapped Morrell back and Chelli followed with a sustained combination, referee Darren Sarginson stepped in at 2:24 of the final round.

The result is a significant shakeup at 175 pounds. Morrell came into the fight as the more recognizable name to American fans and had been viewed as a serious player in the light heavyweight picture despite his recent loss. Instead, he now has a second defeat on his record and real questions to answer about how he handles pressure from durable, disciplined opposition. Chelli, meanwhile, just turned a fill-in assignment into the kind of win that can change a career overnight.

That is especially meaningful because Chelli was not supposed to be the story on this card. He was brought in to replace Callum Smith, and now he has a legitimate argument for bigger opportunities against top contenders or even titleholders. After the upset, Chelli called out the champions, including Smith, and it is hard to argue he has not earned a serious look. The next move matters: was this a one-night breakthrough, or the start of a real run in the division?
