Eddy Reynoso, the trainer of boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez, has some strong words about the upcoming Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight. He's not happy about it at all.
Reynoso knows what he's talking about. He's been at the top of world boxing for years, guiding Canelo through his biggest fights. Under Reynoso's watch, Canelo has beaten top fighters like John Ryder, Amir Khan, Callum Smith, and Jaime Munguia. Just recently, Canelo successfully defended his titles against Edgar Berlanga.
Reynoso runs a serious operation with Canelo, living by the motto "No boxing, no life." So when he speaks about boxing, people listen.
The fight that's got Reynoso fired up is set for November at AT&T; Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It'll be eight two-minute rounds, broadcast live on Netflix. On one side, you've got Mike Tyson, who's pushing 60 and hasn't had a pro fight since 2005. On the other, there's Jake Paul, not even 30, with a 10-1 record including 7 knockouts.
In an interview with Pro Boxing Fans, Reynoso didn't hold back:
"This could be the end of the interview because for me it is very absurd to have this type of fight and it is very disrespectful of [Tyson] to actually put his legacy behind him with such a fight."
Reynoso thinks the whole thing is ridiculous and disrespectful to Tyson's legacy. It's easy to see why he feels that way. Tyson retired after back-to-back losses nearly 20 years ago. Meanwhile, Paul's only been in 11 fights total, facing guys like Tommy Fury, Mike Perry, Ryan Borland, Andre August, and Nate Diaz.
For a serious boxing man like Reynoso, who's dedicated his life to the sport, this kind of matchup just doesn't sit right. He's not alone in thinking this fight is more about entertainment than serious boxing.
