Francis Ngannou believes Sean Strickland is putting in the right kind of work ahead of a potential middleweight title fight with reigning UFC champion Khamzat Chimaev.

With Sean Strickland gearing up for a possible showdown with Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319, former heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou says his longtime training partner is preparing the right way for one of the toughest style matchups in the division. Ngannou shared that assessment in comments to Helen Yee Sports, as attention builds around the middleweight title picture in Las Vegas.

The timing matters. Strickland remains one of the few elite middleweights with both the name value and durability to headline a major pay-per-view, while Chimaev has become one of the UFC’s biggest attractions because of his pressure, wrestling, and unbeaten aura. That makes this more than just a title fight rumor — it is a fight that could reshape the top of the 185-pound class.

“Sean is a good teammate. We’ve trained in the same gym for many years. This fight against Khamzat is completely different. It’s a very tough matchup, but he has the right sparring partner, and he’s placing the right emphasis on wrestling,” Ngannou said on Helen Yee Sports’ YouTube channel.

From an American MMA perspective, that is the entire conversation around Strickland’s chances. Fans know what they are getting from him on the feet: volume, pressure, and a style that can disrupt rhythm over five rounds. The real question is whether he can keep Chimaev from turning the fight into extended grappling exchanges early, where the champion has been most dangerous.

The stakes are obvious. If Chimaev wins, the UFC gets a dominant champion with crossover momentum and a long list of contenders chasing him. If Strickland pulls it off, he instantly changes the narrative around his own career and puts the division back into a much messier, more interesting title mix. Strickland also has something to prove after showing he can still hang near the top, but not yet fully quieting doubts against elite wrestlers.

For now, the focus is on camp — and on whether Strickland’s wrestling prep can hold up once the cage door closes.
