Frank Bruno, a key figure in heavyweight boxing during the 1980s and '90s, has named Tim Witherspoon as the most skillful opponent he faced. Bruno's choice puts Witherspoon ahead of other notable rivals like Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.

Bruno's career in the ring started with a bang. As an amateur, he racked up 20 wins and just one loss. When he turned pro in 1982, he knocked out his first 21 opponents, making a big splash in the boxing world.

His first real test came against James 'Bonecrusher' Smith at Wembley Arena. Bruno fought hard but got stopped in the 10th and final round. This setback didn't slow him down, though. He kept pushing forward, aiming for the top.

Bruno's first shot at a world title came against Tim Witherspoon for the WBA championship. It was a tough fight, and Bruno's team had to throw in the towel. Despite the loss, this fight left a lasting impression on Bruno.

When asked about the most skillful opponent he faced, Bruno didn't hesitate. He said, "Tim Witherspoon was definitely a good all-rounder and a lot better than people give him credit for."

Witherspoon's career backs up Bruno's high praise. He once fought Larry Holmes and lost by a split decision - a fight many thought Witherspoon should've won. He also worked as a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali, picking up tricks from the greatest.

Over his career, Witherspoon beat some big names like James Page, James 'Bonecrusher' Smith, and Tony Tubbs. He retired in 2003 with an impressive 55 wins from 69 fights and had been a world champion twice.

Bruno's career had more big moments after the Witherspoon fight. He faced Mike Tyson in two high-profile showdowns. In their first meeting, Bruno got dropped in the opening round but fought back hard, landing some heavy shots. Tyson eventually stopped him in the fifth round.

Bruno also took on Lennox Lewis in a world title contest but got stopped in the seventh round. However, Bruno's persistence paid off. In 1995, on his fourth try for world honours, he beat Oliver McCall on points and became the WBC champion.

Bruno's choice of Witherspoon as his most skillful opponent shows the respect between fighters. It reminds us that sometimes the toughest opponents aren't always the most famous names.
