Jermall Charlo Reveals Surprising Take on Canelo-Crawford Matchup: "Nobody Expected This"

Canelo got back on top of the division on May 2 when he beat William Scull to win back all the belts. Crawford moved up to super-welterweight last August and won the WBA title from Israil Madrimov.

Jermall Charlo, a two-weight world champion, has shared his thoughts on the match-up. Jermall's twin brother Jermell lost to Canelo in 2023. It was Jermell's first defeat, and Canelo knocked him down in the seventh round on his way to a clear win.

Jermall told Fight Hype he thinks Crawford will win, but he's got to be smart about his weight:

"I like Crawford, allright, my brother fought Canelo not me, I like Crawford in this fight and he gets to stay big but my brother even told me that was his mistake that he made, he thought going up in weight, 'I got to get massive, I got to get big to beat Canelo.' It made him slower, it made his reflexes slower. He'll tell you himself he didn't feel like the Jermell Charlo that y'all seen him fight Tony Harrison, Crawford I feel like that's the same thing as that."

Crawford will move up two weight classes to fight Canelo. It's a similar jump to what Jermell did. Jermall thinks Crawford shouldn't try to match Canelo's size. He believes getting too big will slow Crawford down and hurt his reflexes.

Jermall is also in action tonight. He's making his super-middleweight debut against Thomas LaManna in Las Vegas. After that, he wants to fight Caleb Plant. His ultimate goal is to face Canelo Alvarez himself.

The fight between Canelo and Crawford is set to be a big one. Both fighters are at the top of their game. We'll have to wait until September to see if Crawford can handle the jump in weight and if Canelo can defend his titles.
