Floyd Mayweather's Team Blasts Jake Paul's Latest Fight Choice: "History Repeats Itself"

Paul's choice of opponent has got people talking. While Chavez Jr. brings a world champion pedigree to the ring, critics are quick to point out his recent struggles. The 39-year-old son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez hasn't been active lately, sitting out 2022 and 2023 before a shaky comeback last July against a UFC fighter.

Veteran trainer Jeff Mayweather isn't sold on the matchup. He told SecondsOut:

"It will in the sense that he's fought a legitimate fighter that actually was a professional fighter and a world champion. But to get him after a five-year layoff and him being inactive is almost just like fighting Mike Tyson."

Mayweather's comparison to Paul's last fight against Mike Tyson hits on a key criticism. Many dismissed that bout as a spectacle due to Tyson's age and condition, despite Paul winning by unanimous decision.

Not everyone sees it that way, though. Paul's brother Logan, a WWE star and occasional boxer himself, backs Jake's approach:

"I think Jake is taking the perfect path. I think he's taking guys who are very good, very skilled boxers that are either at his level or maybe even a bit above."

Chavez Jr.'s recent history paints a complicated picture. He's battled substance abuse issues and mental health challenges on top of his declining performances in the ring. These factors have critics lining up to poke holes in the matchup.

For Paul, it's a chance to silence some doubters by facing a former world champion. His stock in the boxing world continues to rise, even as debates rage about the quality of his opposition.

The June 28 showdown will give both fighters a chance to prove something. Paul wants to show he belongs with "legitimate" boxers. Chavez Jr. looks to recapture some of his past glory and prove he's still got something left in the tank.
