Mayweather's been one of boxing's biggest stars for the last 40 years. He ruled the pay-per-view world in the 2000s and 2010s. Before him, Mike Tyson held that title in the late 1980s and 1990s. These two haven't always gotten along, especially when Mayweather said he was the greatest of all time instead of Muhammad Ali.
But now, Mayweather's not talking about himself. He's all about Larry Holmes. He told Fat Joe:
"I gotta be honest, I gotta go Larry Holmes. Larry Holmes beat everybody in his era. He had the basic fundamentals, he had the jab."
Holmes sure did clean up his era. He defended his title 20 times and beat some big names. He took down Muhammad Ali in 1980, though that fight raised eyebrows because Ali wasn't in his prime. Holmes also beat Leon Spinks and Earnie Shavers.
But Holmes didn't win them all. He lost his champion status to Michael Spinks in back-to-back fights. And in 1988, Mike Tyson knocked him out in the 4th round.
Holmes kept fighting until 2002, wrapping up with 69 wins and 6 losses. That's a career most boxers would kill for.
Mayweather picking Holmes over guys like Ali and Tyson might ruffle some feathers. But hey, that's boxing for you. Everyone's got their opinion on who's the best.
