Lennox Lewis wants Deontay Wilder to hang up his gloves. The former heavyweight champ thinks it's time for Wilder to call it quits to keep his health in check.
Lewis knows a thing or two about when to step away from the ring. He wrapped up his own career on a high note, retiring as the WBC champ after a storied run. He beat every opponent he faced, including big names like Vitali Klitschko, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Frank Bruno.
His last fight was a tough one against Vitali Klitschko in June 2003. Lewis won when the fight got stopped in the 6th round due to cuts above Klitschko's eyes. Instead of going for a rematch, Lewis decided to bow out as champ.
Now, Lewis is dishing out some advice to Wilder on Twitter. He thinks Wilder should stick to his word about retiring if he didn't win his last fight.
"Deontay Wilder told us before the fight that he would retire if he didn't win. I think that's a wise decision. He's more than carved out a life in which he can take care of his daughter, ???????? so before he suffers any more damage, it's best to leave the game with ur faculties intact because there's a LOT more life to live after boxing."
Lewis makes some solid points. Wilder's got enough money to look after his daughter. By quitting now, he can dodge more damage and keep his mind sharp. After all, there's a whole lot of life to live once you step out of the ring.
Wilder, known for his knockout power, has hit a rough patch lately. He lost to Zhilei Zhang in June 2024, got knocked out twice by Tyson Fury, and lost on points to Joseph Parker.
Despite being out of action for almost a year, Wilder's gearing up for another fight. He's set to face Tyrrell Herndon in Wichita, Kansas this June. But Lewis reckons it might be smarter for Wilder to walk away now, while he's still got his health.
