Anthony Joshua plans to step back into the ring after a long break since September 2024. The former two-time world heavyweight champion looks to revive his career with a big fight.
Joshua's recent run has been a mix of ups and downs. He lost his belts to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and couldn't get them back in the rematch. But he bounced back with four wins in a row, beating Jermaine Franklin on points and stopping Robert Helenius, Otto Wallin, and Francis Ngannou. His last fight ended in a loss to IBF champion Daniel Dubois, who knocked him down in the first round and stopped him in the fifth.
On the other side of the potential matchup, Deontay Wilder has had a tough time lately. The "Bronze Bomber" lost two out of three fights against Tyson Fury and couldn't find his form after that. He lost to Joseph Parker on points and got knocked out by Zhilei Zhang in five rounds. Wilder will try to turn things around on June 27 when he faces Tyrrell Herndon.
Wilder's manager, Shelly Finkel, talked about a possible fight with Joshua:
"It would be a big, big fight still. Maybe not quite as big as it was, you know, five years ago, but it's still enormous. It's like in a way, Mayweather and Pacquiao wasn't the same when they fought, but it was pretty damn big."
Finkel also mentioned where and when the fight might happen:
"Or Deontay fights again this year after June and goes right into Joshua for the end of the year or next year. I believe that's a Wembley card, so we'll see."
Both fighters need a big win to get back on top. Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter, even said Wilder should retire if he loses to Herndon.
Wilder must first get past Herndon on June 27. If he wins, we might see him face Joshua at Wembley Stadium later this year or next. It's a fight fans have wanted for years, and it could help both boxers climb back to the top of the heavyweight division.
