Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a soft spot for his fight against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. The former boxing champ, who ended his career with a perfect 50-0-0 record, looks back fondly on this bout due to its financial success.
Mayweather, known as "Money" in the ring, fought many big names during his career. He won 15 championships across five weight classes, from featherweight to middleweight. His defensive boxing style made him an undisputed champion in four divisions.
When asked about his favorite fights, Mayweather mentioned several. He enjoyed his bouts with Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti, and Ricky Hatton. But the fight against Canelo Alvarez on September 14, 2013, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, holds a special place for him.
"Canelo and I were able to lock up, and did record-breaking numbers," Mayweather said.
The fight, dubbed "The One," saw Mayweather win by unanimous decision. It pulled in 2.2 million pay-per-view buys, making it the second-highest at the time. Only Mayweather's fight with Oscar De La Hoya, which got 2.5 million buys, topped it until his later bout with Manny Pacquiao reached 4.4 million.
Mayweather also talked about his 2021 fight with former MMA champion Conor McGregor. He saw it as groundbreaking for bringing together boxing and MMA fans.
"I think Conor McGregor was good because we broke the mold and showed that MMA and boxing can come together," Mayweather explained.
Mayweather's career choices often stirred up controversy. His reasons for picking favorite fights might seem unusual to some. But they line up with what's always been important to him: high ratings and big paychecks.
