Floyd Mayweather has picked Terence Crawford as the current pound-for-pound best fighter in boxing. The former champion, who ended his career with a perfect 50-0 record, shared his thoughts on who's at the top of the sport right now.
Mayweather, who beat big names like Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez during his career, said in an interview with Brian Mazique:
"I think Terence Crawford, right now in the sport of boxing, is the pound-for-pound best fighter. It's good to see him in the position that he's in … Terence Crawford, continue to be great."
Crawford's got the stats to back up Mayweather's claim. He's a four-weight world champion and hasn't lost in 41 fights. He's beaten tough opponents like Amir Khan, Viktor Postol, Shawn Porter, and Errol Spence Jr. What's more, he's a two-time undisputed champion, putting him in a special group with Oleksandr Usyk and Naoya Inoue.
But Crawford's not done yet. He's set to fight Canelo Alvarez in September, jumping up two weight classes. If he wins, he'll be a five-weight world champion. Crawford thinks a win over Canelo would make him one of the top three best fighters ever. He's not shy about saying it either.
Canelo's no pushover though. He's only lost twice in over 60 fights. It's a big challenge for Crawford, but that's what being the best is all about.
While Mayweather thinks Crawford's the top dog right now, there's always debate about who's the best pound-for-pound. Usyk and Inoue are right up there too. All three of them are two-time undisputed champs, which is pretty rare.
Mayweather knows a thing or two about being the best. He was at the top of the sport for years. He even thinks he should be seen as the greatest boxer ever. But for now, he's giving Crawford the nod as the best active fighter. It'll be interesting to see if Crawford can keep that spot after his big fight with Canelo.
