Carl Froch, the former world super-middleweight champion, has given his honest take on how a fight between him and Roy Jones Jr would have gone down in their prime. The Nottingham boxer admits he would have come out on the losing end.
Froch, known as 'The Cobra', held the IBF, WBA, and WBC titles during his career. He's famous for his two fights with George Groves, two battles with Mikkel Kessler, and beating Lucian Bute away from home. Fans will also remember his dramatic last-second knockout win over Jermain Taylor.
Speaking to ProBoxTV, Froch didn't hold back when asked about a fantasy matchup with Jones Jr.
"He hits ya. I can't say he wouldn't have hit me, because I get hit with shots. If I'd have got my guard up, he'd have brought that guard down. He'd have been too quick with that jab and he'd have just out-worked me, with speed."
Froch went on to say:
"[Jones would] have hammered me. You asked me what would have happened — he'd have beaten me up. That's what would have happened."
Jones Jr's career speaks for itself. He won world titles from middleweight all the way up to heavyweight. His last fight was in 2023, leaving the sport with 66 wins from 76 fights, including 47 knockouts.
These days, Jones Jr works as a trainer. He used to coach Chris Eubank Jr and thinks his former student will beat Conor Benn in their upcoming April showdown.
Froch only lost twice in his career. One of those defeats came against Andre Ward in 2011. Ward, who was considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters at the time, has since called Froch an "overachiever".
Since hanging up his gloves, Froch has become a popular voice in boxing. His honest assessment of how he'd fare against Jones Jr shows why fans appreciate his straightforward style.
