Roy Jones Jr, a boxing legend and former trainer of Chris Eubank Jr, thinks Eubank Jr might not have the drive to win a world title. Jones shared his thoughts on Eubank Jr's career and goals as the 34-year-old boxer prepares for his next fight.
Jones, who won world titles in four weight classes, knows what it takes to reach the top. He dominated at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and even heavyweight. From 1999 to 2002, Jones was the undisputed champion at 175 pounds. He beat big names like Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, and Felix Trinidad. Many consider him one of the best boxers ever.
After retiring, Jones started training other fighters. He worked with Eubank Jr for a while, but they split up after Eubank lost to Liam Smith in January 2023. Eubank got his revenge in a rematch without Jones in his corner.
Now, Jones isn't sure if Eubank Jr really wants a world title. He told Covers:
"Eubank could win a world title but I don't know if he has the hunger to win one. When you become 34-years-old you start to think differently."
Jones thinks Eubank Jr can win a title, but he's not sure if Eubank wants it enough. He believes Eubank's age might be changing his priorities.
Jones went on to say:
"He is more interested in the Conor Benn fight than a world title fight because there's more money in it. That's what people are interested in now–money, names and events. Forget about tough fights, it's about money, names and events."
It looks like Eubank Jr cares more about big paydays and famous opponents than tough fights for titles. He's getting ready to face Conor Benn in April, continuing their long-standing rivalry.
Eubank Jr has been a pro boxer for almost 15 years but hasn't won a world title yet. His recent win against Liam Smith showed he's still a force to be reckoned with. But at 34, time might be running out for a world title shot.
Former champion Carl Froch has also shared his thoughts on the upcoming Eubank Jr vs Benn fight. As the boxing world watches, we'll see if Eubank Jr proves Jones wrong and makes a run for a world title, or if he'll stick to chasing big-money fights.
