Lomachenko's Surprising Post-Fight Revelation to Bob Arum: "I Never Expected This"

Lomachenko, a decorated Olympian with an amateur record of 396 wins and just 1 loss, turned pro in 2013. He quickly made his mark in the professional ranks, tying the record for winning a world title in the fewest professional fights. The Ukrainian star became a multiple weight class champion and racked up wins against top opponents like Nicholas Walters, Guillermo Rigondeaux, and Jorge Linares.

Despite his impressive career, Lomachenko has faced setbacks. He lost a narrow decision to Orlando Salido in his second pro fight, suffered defeats to Teofimo Lopez in 2020 and Devin Haney in 2023. His most recent bout saw him claim the vacant IBF strap against George Kambosos Jr in May 2023.

Arum recently met with Lomachenko, his father, and manager Egis Klimas in Los Angeles. During this meeting, Lomachenko expressed a desire to spend time with his kids and return to Ukraine.

"He wants to spend time with his kids and was going back to Ukraine,"
Arum recounted Lomachenko's words.

The promoter added that Lomachenko said he'd get in touch after the New Year. When asked about the fighter's future plans, Arum told FightHub TV:

"I can't read the guy's mind, I don't know which way he wants to operate. He's in a situation where there is a war still on in Ukraine so I can't predict."

Lomachenko had entered negotiations for a fight with Gervonta Davis but pulled out due to lack of motivation. When asked about the possibility of this matchup, Arum said:

"That would be a great fight, but there are a lot of great fights for him – Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn Davis, so there are a lot of good opponents."

The ongoing war in Ukraine seems to play a significant role in Lomachenko's current mindset and future decisions. Whether he decides to return to the ring or not, Lomachenko's legacy as an all-time great in boxing is secure.
