UFC welterweight champion Tyrone Woodley will defend his title on September 8 at the UFC 228 in the fight against the Briton Darren Till.
It was expected that Woodley's next opponent will be interim champion Colby Covington, but the latter was injured, and the leadership of the UFC seems not ready to wait for his recovery in connection with the organization of a major battle in the "numbered" tournament.
UFC President Dana White said that Covington would be stripped of his belt as soon as Woodley-Till's fight begins.
36-year-old Woodley (18-3-1) won his championship belt in July 2016, knocking out Robbie Lawler. Four months later, Tyrone drew with Stephen Thompson, and then took the lead in an immediate rematch. Woodley's last fight was last July when he defeated the veteran Demian Maya.
25-year-old Till (17-0-1) joined UFC last year and has already had five fights - four wins and one draw. In May Till defeated Stephen Thompson, but missed the weight before the fight. It seemed that this circumstance would not allow him to claim the title, but the management plans changed.
