Oscar De La Hoya suggested Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) to stick to proper matchmaking and change his coach, but Ronnie Shields went even further and stated that it is time for the Mexican to retire. The famous American coach believes that Alvarez has already proven himself enough in the ring, and that years of fighting and physical exhaustion have significantly affected his current capabilities.

“Canelo had a great career, but when the time comes, it will all be over. For now, I don’t think he should return to the ring. He had one of the best careers a boxer could only dream of. He achieved what he aimed for. Who else does he need to prove anything to? He has fulfilled his purpose. Now, as the door closes in front of him, he must close it himself and say: ‘I had a great career, but enough’,” Shields stated.

“Time is not on his side. Whether it’s a young or old trainer doesn’t matter, and it will not help him change his current state. We saw his best years, now we see his worst. His body is telling him that it’s over, that he should enjoy life. Crawford has gotten older, but he has fewer fights behind him, less experience. On the other hand, Canelo is just old in the realities of boxing,” concluded the former trainer of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whitaker, and many others.
