Tommy Brooks, the legendary boxing trainer, has died at 71. Promoter Lou DiBella shared the news, saying Brooks lost his fight with aggressive cancer.
Brooks' journey in boxing started early. He won the 1975 National AAU Middleweight title as an amateur, beating Tom Sullivan and Michael Spinks. He also served in the U.S. Air Force, where he became a military boxing champ. Brooks turned pro and fought until 1979, ending with a 7-3 record.
But Brooks' real impact came as a trainer. In the mid-90s, he guided Evander Holyfield to two big wins over Mike Tyson. This put Brooks on the map as a top trainer.
Brooks worked with many great fighters. He helped Mike Tyson during his comeback in the early 2000s, leading to a six-fight unbeaten run. The trainer also sharpened the skills of Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko. Other boxers he trained include Meldrick Taylor, Mike McCallum, Vinny Pazienza, and Charles Murray.

DiBella's words sum up how many in boxing saw Brooks. He wasn't loud or flashy, but his name carried weight in boxing gyms for decades.
Brooks had a special talent for rebuilding fighters. As one observer put it: "His true gift, it turned out, wasn't in throwing punches. It was in teaching others how to throw them better."
In his later years, Brooks focused on mentoring young fighters and coaching. He drew inspiration from boxing legends like Eddie Futch and Archie Moore.
