Oscar De La Hoya has made his pick in a fantasy fight two of the greatest fighters ever. The former champion believes Sugar Ray Robinson would beat Sugar Ray Leonard if they met in their primes.
For years, fans have argued about who'd win between the two Sugar Rays. Both were incredible left an incredible marks on boxing history, but in different eras.
Leonard ruled the 1980s. He won the WBC world welterweight title and became the undisputed champ at 147lbs. He beat some of the best, including Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns. In 1980, Leonard got his revenge on Duran in a big rematch, winning back the WBC welterweight belt.
Robinson's career was even more impressive. He became world champion six different times. From 1946 to 1951, he held the world welterweight title. Then, over the next nine years, he won the middleweight title
In a quick game of 'Knockout' with the Daily Mail, De La Hoya didn't hesitate. When asked who'd win between Leonard and Robinson, he said, "I gotta go with Sugar Ray Robinson."
It's hard to argue with De La Hoya's choice. Robinson's career over 200 times in a career that lasted 25 years, from 1940 to 1965. He took on and beat the best of his time, including guys like Randolph Turpin, Carmen Basilio, and Jake LaMotta.
Robinson's impact on boxing can't be overstated. He inspired generations of fans and fighters who came after him. Sadly, he died on April 12, 1989, at 67 years old from Alzheimer's disease. But his legacy as one of the greatest boxers ever lives on.
