Roberto Duran has thrown some punches at Floyd Mayweather's perfect record. The boxing legend claims Mayweather's famous 50-0 tally isn't all it's cracked up to be.
In a recent chat with One on One Boxing, Duran didn't pull any punches about Mayweather's career. He reckons Floyd actually lost a few fights that were handed to him as wins.
"He fought a Mexican, the Mexican beat him, but they gave it to him [Mayweather]. Then he fought another, he lost but got the decision. I believe he's lost three fights but they've gifted him those wins."
Duran didn't stop there. He also took a swing at Mayweather's fighting style:
"For me he is a boxer that's weak. He doesn't like being hit to the body, and as soon as he gets hit there, he turns into a road runner, and I have much more experience than him."
Mayweather's career stats are impressive on paper. He racked up 50 wins and zero losses over more than two decades. He snagged world titles in five weight classes and beat big names like Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez, and Shane Mosley.
But some fights have sparked debate. His 2002 clash with Jose Luis Castillo stands out. Mayweather got the nod from the judges, but many fans thought Castillo deserved the win. Mayweather did settle the score more convincingly in their rematch.
Mayweather's ability to consistently win at the highest level remains one of modern boxing's most remarkable achievements. But some in the sport, like Duran, question how dominant he truly was. They point to his defensive style and some close calls on the scorecards.
Love him or hate him, Mayweather's perfect record will always be a talking point in boxing circles. And it looks like Roberto Duran won't be changing his tune anytime soon.
