Jake Paul added another big name to his boxing record last month. The YouTuber-turned-boxer beat former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision, improving his professional record to 12-1.
Paul's career has seen him rack up wins against some well-known names. He's beaten Anderson Silva, Nate Diaz, and Tyron Woodley. But his most talked-about victory came in November when he claimed a controversial win over Mike Tyson. The fight raised eyebrows because Tyson was 58 and hadn't fought professionally in nearly two decades.
Now, Paul's former trainer Shannon Briggs wants a piece of the action. Briggs, known as 'The Cannon', held the WBO heavyweight title from 2006 to 2007 and has the record for most first-round knockout wins in history at 37.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Briggs didn't seem too impressed with Paul's win over Chavez Jr.
"Not much. Chavez really wasn't throwing no punches. Kinda weird. But Jake Paul's doing great cause he's proving that he's taking it serious. He's trying really hard to make a name for himself in the game and he has the money behind him, so he's doing good."
When asked about Paul's chances of fighting for a title in the future, Briggs wasn't convinced.
"In regards to him fighting for a title, who he gonna fight? … Whoever he fights, good luck. But if he fights me, I know what will happen."
Briggs then threw down the gauntlet to his former trainee:
"I'll knock Jake Paul out, and I'm 53,000 years old. I'm the oldest man in the history of the planet and I'll knock him out cold."
Paul recently received a world ranking in the cruiserweight division. But there's talk that ranking could soon be taken away. Whether Paul will take up Briggs' challenge or continue his march towards a title shot remains to be seen.
