Deontay Wilder got back to winning ways this past weekend. The former WBC heavyweight champion secured a seventh-round stoppage victory over Tyrell Herndon, marking his first win in three years.
Wilder's return to the ring came after a challenging period in his career. He suffered a decision loss to Joseph Parker and a fifth-round stoppage defeat against Zhilei Zhang in 2023. These setbacks followed his trilogy with Tyson Fury, which ended with two consecutive knockout losses for Wilder.
The comeback fight against Herndon, a relatively unknown opponent, saw Wilder secure the win despite not displaying his usual explosive style. Malik Scott, Wilder's former coach, shared his thoughts on the fight with FightHype.
"It's his first fight back since return. He used his jab pretty good. His timing was off a little bit. He threw a good left hook to the liver."
Scott suggested that Wilder should "continue to listen to Don House and Jay Deas and take a couple more fights like that." This advice aligns with the approach of taking time to climb back to the top of the heavyweight division.
Currently, Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois hold major world titles in the heavyweight division. They're set to face each other in an undisputed match on July 19, which will shape the landscape of the division.
Wilder's path back to championship contention will likely involve more fights to regain his form and timing. The 'Bronze Bomber' will need to build on this victory to re-establish himself as a force in the heavyweight division.
