Jake Paul takes another step towards his dream of becoming a world champion. The 28-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio will face former WBC world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday, June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
Paul's last fight saw him score a unanimous decision victory over Mike Tyson in a controversial bout at AT&T; Stadium, Texas on November 15. Now, 'The Problem Child' looks to build on that win against the 39-year-old Mexican fighter.
The matchup serves as another stepping stone for Paul, who's been vocal about his desire to capture world honors. A victory over Chavez Jr could move him closer to that goal.
Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr shared his thoughts on Paul's strategy in a recent interview with Prime Casino.
"The whole purpose [behind the fight] is creating the argument for Jake Paul to fight for a world title. That's what he really wants to do. And it's not bad the way he's going about it. He's creating that argument, and eventually, if he keeps going, he'll get a shot."
Jones Jr believes Paul will likely get his title shot but isn't certain about the outcome. He added:
"I ain't gonna say that [he will win a title], but he'll get a shot depending on who the opponent is, but he will get a shot, and he has the power to win anything. He can knock anybody out."
Paul's team continues to work on big fights. They're currently in talks with reigning WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis for a potential clash before the end of 2025.
Chavez Jr will come into this fight with a point to prove. The former champion looks to derail Paul's ambitions and remind everyone of his own skills in the ring.
The June 28 bout promises to be an important test for both fighters. Paul aims to show he belongs among boxing's elite, while Chavez Jr wants to prove he's still a force to be reckoned with in the sport.
