Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are set to face off in a massive boxing match. The two champions will meet on Saturday, September 13, at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue in the USA. They'll fight for Canelo's undisputed super-middleweight championship.
Canelo made the announcement right after he beat William Scull to grab the IBF super-middleweight title. That win made him the only boxer ever to become undisputed champion at 168lbs twice. Now, he's ready to defend those belts against Crawford.
For Crawford, this fight is a big deal. If he wins, he'll become the first boxer ever to be undisputed champion in three different weight classes. But it won't be easy. The 37-year-old, known as 'Bud', hasn't fought above light-middleweight before. His last fight was in August last year when he outpointed Israil Madrimov for the WBA world title at light-middleweight. That fight wasn't his best showing, going the full twelve rounds in a less-than-impressive performance.
Canelo, on the other hand, is a force at 168lbs. The 34-year-old from Guadalajara first fought at super-middleweight in 2018 against Rocky Fielding. Since then, he's beaten some of the best in the division, including Gennady Golovkin, Callum Smith, and Jaime Munguia.
James Toney, a retired three-weight world champion, thinks Crawford will win. Toney famously moved up to heavyweight and knocked out Evander Holyfield in 2003. He told FightHype:
"I got Crawford, all about skills. They all said that [size difference] when I fought Holyfield, they all said that."
Toney believes the size difference won't matter and it's all about skills.
This fight could be the toughest test of Crawford's exceptional career. For Canelo, it's another chance to prove why he's the king of the super-middleweight division. Boxing fans can't wait for September 13 to see these two champions clash in the ring.
