Zhang's recent run in the ring has been a mix of highs and lows. He knocked out Joe Joyce twice in 2023, stopping him in the 6th and 3rd rounds respectively. But he's also tasted defeat, losing a controversial points decision to Filip Hrgovic in 2022 and dropping a decision to Joseph Parker. His most recent outing ended in a knockout loss to Agit Kabayel in February 2024.
Despite these setbacks, Zhang's determination remains unshaken. He took to his YouTube channel to share his plans:
"42 is not the end just a new chapter. We will be discussing our next steps, including the opponent, time and location. I hope to fight by the end of this year. If Joshua is interested, okay I'm in. Wherever it is. This fight has been talked about for many years but it never materialised. It will be great if we can make it happen this time around."
Zhang and Joshua have history. They faced off in the quarter-finals of the 2012 London Olympics, with Joshua winning on points. Now, Zhang wants to settle the score in the pro ranks.
"My dream is unachieved. I'm still chasing. I am still on route to be the best world champion. I am still one step away from that goal, but it takes a lot to get up there."
While Zhang eyes Joshua, AJ might have other plans. The British heavyweight is currently nursing a minor elbow injury and is rumored to be targeting a bout with Tyson Fury. Joshua's last outing ended in a conclusive loss to Daniel Dubois.
Zhang's pursuit of Joshua and a world title adds another layer of intrigue to the heavyweight division. With notable names like Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder, and Joseph Parker in the mix, the landscape remains as competitive as ever. Zhang's next move could shake things up as he looks to prove that at 42, he's still a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world.
