Canelo beat Scull by decision on Arab soil, regaining his undisputed champion status. But the fight didn't impress everyone. Edgar Berlanga called it boring, saying Scull ran for 12 rounds.
Berlanga took to social media during the fight, writing, "My God, this damn fight is boring! I need the rematch #caneloberlanga2". He later challenged Canelo to a rematch in 2026, saying, "Let's do the rematch; let's do the rematch in 2026. Let's go! You know Puerto Rico and Mexico are the best."
Berlanga's not sitting idle while waiting for that rematch, though. He's set to fight Hamzah Sheeraz on July 12, on the undercard of Shakur Stevenson vs William Zepeda. This comes after his first-round knockout of Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz, which followed his loss to Canelo last September.
Berlanga's also got beef with Caleb Plant. The two have a long-running feud, with Berlanga recently issuing a profanity-laced challenge to Plant.
As for Canelo, at 35, he's still got plenty of options. He's under contract with Riyadh Season for two more fights, expected to wrap up in 2026. Potential opponents include Dmitry Bivol, who handed Canelo one of his two pro losses, David Benavidez, who moved up in weight after being Canelo's mandatory challenger, and even Jake Paul for a big-money fight.
Fans had mixed reactions to Berlanga's comments about Canelo's recent fight. Some suggested he settle unfinished business with Jaime Munguia and Caleb Plant first.
Canelo's faced criticism for not committing to fight David Benavidez. But with the Crawford fight now set, fans will have to wait and see what's next for the Mexican superstar.
