De La Hoya, a former champion in five divisions, believes Terence Crawford could claim that title if he beats Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. The Golden Boy shared his thoughts in an interview with Brian Mazique.
"If Crawford can do it, Jesus Lord, I mean give this man the title of being the greatest ever … but I just don't see it."
De La Hoya, who beat boxing legends like Julio Cesar Chavez, Ike Quartey, Pernell Whitaker, and Fernando Vargas, knows a thing or two about greatness. Now a prominent boxing promoter, he sees the challenge Crawford faces.
The 37-year-old switch-hitting Crawford, already a champion in four weight classes, will have to move up two divisions to face Canelo. De La Hoya points out the difficulties:
"Canelo is a big puncher. Canelo walks on quicksand, which Crawford can use against him. But the pressure of the heavier guy is a factor. Canelo will be 200 pounds in the ring. It's a tough fight."
Despite the odds, De La Hoya gives Crawford credit for considering the challenge. He adds:
"If he pulls it off he'll be the messiah of fighters."
While Crawford contemplates this potential fight, Canelo has his hands full. Next month, he'll face William Scull, aiming to become a two-time undisputed super-middleweight world champion.
Whether Crawford takes on Canelo or not, De La Hoya's comments have sparked a debate about what it takes to be considered the greatest boxer of all time.
