Canelo Alvarez has thrown a jab at Floyd Mayweather Jr's unbeaten record. The Mexican star claims Mayweather should have lost his perfect streak in a 2007 fight against Oscar De La Hoya.
Alvarez, now 34, knows Mayweather's skills firsthand. He suffered his first pro loss to 'Money' Mayweather back in 2013 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was for the WBC world light middleweight title, and Mayweather's experience and technical brilliance proved too much for the young Mexican.
In a recent chat with King J, Canelo shared his thoughts on a fight that happened years before his own clash with Mayweather. He said, "I think Oscar De La Hoya won."

Canelo was talking about the May 5, 2007 bout between Mayweather and De La Hoya, billed as 'The World Awaits'. The fight was for the WBC light middleweight title, and it ended with Mayweather winning by split decision.
The judges' scorecards that night read 116-112 and 115-113 for Mayweather, with one judge scoring it 115-113 for De La Hoya. Many at ringside weren't happy with the decision, even though the punch stats showed Mayweather landed more shots.
De La Hoya hung up his gloves a couple of years after the Mayweather fight. His last bout was against Manny Pacquiao. After 45 pro fights, 'The Golden Boy' turned his focus to promoting and has done well, working with big names like Canelo himself, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Shane Mosley.
Mayweather kept his perfect record until he retired in 2017 with 50 wins and no losses. He won world titles in five different weight classes during his career.
Canelo's comments to King J show he's not afraid to speak his mind, even about a fight that happened over 15 years ago. It's clear the loss to Mayweather still stings, but Canelo has gone on to become a star in his own right.
