Billy Joe Saunders Delivers Blunt Verdict on Chris Eubank Jr's World Title Hopes: "He's Missing Something"

Ronald Crawley April 20, 2025, 5:10 a.m.

Eubank Jr., now 35 and from Brighton, has held the British Middleweight title and the IBO belt at both middleweight and super-middleweight. He's never won a major world title, though. His first try was back in 2014 against Saunders, but he lost by split decision.

The fight with Benn was supposed to happen earlier but got pushed back after Benn failed a drug test. Now it's on again, and there's a lot of family history behind it. Eubank Jr. has put his world title dreams on hold to settle this old score.

Saunders, who beat Eubank Jr. before, doesn't think his old opponent has what it takes to be a world champ. He said so on the Up Front podcast:

"I said it from day one, Eubank will never be world champion. I tell you the reason why, 'cause I've been in the ring with him. I know the difference between your David Lemieux, I can see why they've been world champions, Andy Lee, even John Ryder."

Saunders thinks Eubank Jr.'s age is catching up with him. He added:

"He can fight but he can't box, that's the problem. When he was 24, 25, he was a wind-up toy, you could get him fit, wind him up and let him go and he'd go all day. Now he's 33, 34, you've got to learn to pick your punches and float around … He'll never be world champion as long as he's got a hole in his a**e."

You can hear the full interview on the Up Front podcast.

Saunders is backing Benn to win the upcoming fight. But if Eubank Jr. does come out on top, he might get a shot at Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for a world title. That would be his chance to prove Saunders wrong.
