Lennox Lewis, the former undisputed heavyweight champion, has put Oleksandr Usyk in the same league as himself among the all-time great heavyweights. Lewis made this bold statement recently, recognizing Usyk's achievements in the sport.
Both Lewis and Usyk share the distinction of being undisputed heavyweight champions. Lewis was the last boxer to hold this title before Usyk claimed it. During his career, Lewis was known for his solid fundamentals, stiff jab, and big right hand. He beat every opponent he faced, avenging his only two losses against Hasim Rahman and Oliver McCall. His notable wins include victories over Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.
Usyk's career has been equally impressive. He remains undefeated and has never been knocked down. In 2018, he became the undisputed cruiserweight champion before moving up to heavyweight. Last year, Usyk solidified his place in boxing history by becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion after beating Tyson Fury twice, including a rematch in December.
When asked about how he would approach a fight with Usyk, Lewis shared his strategy in a recent interview. He said he'd go after Usyk, assert himself, and try to back him up.
"It's quicker to go forward than backwards. I'd assert myself, get combinations in, and end with a hook or uppercut. Usyk ducks and sways a lot, so I'd anticipate that. He's a counter puncher who waits for his opponent to throw before he counters."
Lewis's high regard for Usyk was clear when he ranked him among the greatest heavyweights. He stated, "I would say in the same room as me," implying that he considers Usyk to be one of the best heavyweight fighters of all time.
Looking ahead, Usyk aims to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion. However, he faces challenges on this path. Joseph Parker has emerged as a mandatory challenger, and Daniel Dubois is another potential opponent in the mix.
As Usyk continues to make his mark in heavyweight boxing, Lewis's endorsement adds weight to his growing legacy in the sport.
