Shakur Stevenson wants to get some advice from Floyd Mayweather Jr. The WBC lightweight champion plans to reach out to the boxing legend for tips on dealing with hand problems.
Stevenson, who's got a perfect 23-0 record, just defended his title last month. He beat Josh Padley with a 9th round TKO in a dominant performance. But now, he's looking for some guidance on how to handle hand issues that could affect his career.
The young champ said he's talked to Mayweather before, but he wants to dig deeper this time. He explained:
"Yeah I had a conversation with him a long time ago, but I think we need to revisit the conversation and also, not only revisit the conversation I need to get more detail, more in-depth about everything that he done with his hands that helped him prevail through all of the notches that he had to deal with coming up."
Stevenson's not wasting any time. He's got a plan to call Mayweather soon:
"I'm definitely gonna call him, probably when I get back and settle down a little bit more, but I'm gonna call him and ask him exactly what he did, what I need to do, how do I help myself, how do I save my career."
Mayweather, now 48, knows a thing or two about dealing with hand problems. The Grand Rapids native fought through his own issues on his way to a perfect 50-0 record and world titles in five weight classes. He beat some of the best, including Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, and Canelo Alvarez, before retiring after his win over Conor McGregor in 2017.
Now, Mayweather's running his own promotion company, Mayweather Promotions, and working with fighters like Gervonta Davis. His experience could be just what Stevenson needs to keep his own unbeaten streak going and handle any hand problems that come his way.
