"As of right now the biggest puncher at 135 is Gervonta Davis, but the most skilful fighter at 135 would be hands down Shakur Stevenson."
Both Davis and Stevenson have had impressive careers so far. They've both moved up through weight classes and become three-weight world champions.
'Tank' Davis won his first world title, the IBF super-featherweight belt, back in 2017. He then picked up the WBA lightweight title in 2019 and stopped Mario Barrios for the WBA super-lightweight title in 2021.
Stevenson's journey has been just as impressive. He's held the WBO featherweight title and unified the WBO and WBC super-featherweight belts. Now, he's the current WBC lightweight champion, having won the title in November 2023. He's already defended it twice, most recently stopping Josh Padley in the ninth round in February.
Mayweather, who guided Davis's career for several years before they parted ways, still keeps a close eye on his former protégé. But he's also clearly impressed by Stevenson's skills.
In fact, Mayweather compared Stevenson to another boxing great, saying:
"It's really all about skills. Pernell Whittaker wasn't a huge puncher but he was very exciting, very tough and he fought everybody. Shakur is trying to do the same thing."
Boxing fans have been hoping to see Davis and Stevenson face off for years. The possibility of this match-up has got people talking, but nothing's set in stone yet. Stevenson recently mentioned another fighter he'd be willing to face, which might affect the chances of a showdown with Davis.
