De La Hoya, who runs Golden Boy Promotions, has been in boxing his whole life. He's been promoting fights for over 20 years and has helped fighters like Canelo and Ryan Garcia become big stars. But lately, he's been getting a lot of attention for reasons that have nothing to do with his success.
He's had a public fight with Ryan Garcia, one of his top fighters. He's also been posting random rants on Instagram and often takes shots at Eddie Hearn, the chairman of Matchroom Boxing.
Now, De La Hoya's got a new target: Dana White. White, who's best known for running the UFC, is getting into boxing promotion with help from Turki Alalshikh, a new power player in the sport. This could lead to another big fight for De La Hoya, who's called out White before.
What really got under De La Hoya's skin was when Alalshikh said he'd handed over control of boxing to White. De La Hoya told reporters:
"I did hear that [Turki] passed over the reins of boxing to Dana White. That comment to me, I felt a little offended. I've been in boxing all my life. I've been promoting for 20-some-odd years... And nobody's going to touch me there, because we are the best developers in the fight game and we take our fighters to championship levels and super-stardom, like we have with Canelo and Ryan Garcia."
Despite feeling insulted, De La Hoya says he's trying to take the high road. He's proud of what Golden Boy Promotions has done and wants to keep working with Alalshikh because it's been good for business.
More competition among promoters usually leads to bigger events. That fits with what Alalshikh has said he wants to do since he got into boxing. It looks like things are heating up in the world of boxing promotion, and De La Hoya is right in the middle of it all.
