Deontay Wilder Shares Surprising Take on Joseph Parker's Recent Knockout Streak: "Never Expected That"

Parker's career has seen a major turnaround lately. He's become one of the form men in the heavyweight division, winning three of his last five fights by knockout. This run includes victories over Simon Kean, Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and a second-round knockout of Martin Bakole.

Parker's victory over Wilder in December 2023 was a significant upset. The New Zealander outpointed the former WBC world champion, adding to his impressive list of opponents. Parker had previously gone the distance with Anthony Joshua in 2018, being the first to do so.

In a recent interview with 78SportTV, Wilder gave his honest verdict on Parker's power. He said:

"What made the fight was the punch he got off on me. He caught me in a dazing moment. I knew he was coming with the overhand right which I'd been blocking all night. But at some point in time I zoned out for a minute. I don't know what the f**k happen. Then the punch came, it wasn't that it hurt, none of his punches phased me, at all, I smiled going back to the corner, but things like that shouldn't happen."

Wilder noted that Parker's power "wasn't too much". He admitted the overhand right caught him off guard, putting him on shaky legs, but he ultimately survived the moment.

Parker's recent success under coach Andy Lee has put him in line for a world title shot. However, he might face delays with IBF Champion Daniel Dubois and Oleksandr Usyk heading towards an undisputed fight. Parker might need to face another top contender while waiting for his shot.

As for Wilder, he's not yet retired despite recent setbacks. He lost to Zhilei Zhang by 5th round stoppage in June 2024. The Bronze Bomber plans to return to action sometime this year, though his recent comeback attempt fell through.

Parker's resurgence and Wilder's assessment add another layer to the ever-changing heavyweight landscape. The division remains as unpredictable and exciting as ever.
