Benavidez has a lot to brag about. He's been a super-middleweight champion twice. Since moving up in weight, he's beaten tough guys like Oleksandr Gvozdyk and David Morrell. He's also picked up the WBC interim title and WBA 'Regular' title along the way. Now, he's looking at a possible fight with the undisputed champion Dmitry Bivol.
Bivol just became the undisputed light heavyweight champion. He beat Artur Beterbiev by majority decision last weekend. It was a big win for Bivol, who lost to Beterbiev in their first fight back in October.
But there's an interesting story about Benavidez and Bivol that's been making the rounds. It's about a sparring session they had a while back at Churchill Boxing Club in Los Angeles.
Peter Berg, a film director who runs the gym with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, first told the story on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. He said:
"Bivol trains in our gym. The hardest punch I've ever seen anybody throw in my life was in our gym. David Benavidez was sparring Bivol and Bivol caught him and dropped him with a jab in sparring."
But Berg got it wrong. He later fixed his mistake on social media, saying:
"I have to retract something that I said because I was wrong. I said Bivol dropped Benavidez at Churchill Boxing Club with a jab, I remembered it wrong, it was Benavidez that dropped Bivol. I don't know why I remembered it wrong but I did, and I suspected actually when I was saying it that I was wrong, but it was Benavidez that dropped Bivol, straight up, with an incredible jab."
This story has got fans talking about a possible fight between Bivol and Benavidez. We should know more about that in the next few months. If it doesn't happen, Bivol might go for a third fight with Beterbiev instead.
