Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, and Teofimo Lopez will step into the ring on the same night at Times Square, New York. The event, set for May 2, marks the first ever boxing card at the iconic location.
Haney faces Jose Ramirez, a former unified super-lightweight champion. Garcia takes on ex-WBA 140lb champion Rolly Romero. Lopez defends his WBO super-lightweight title against Arnold Barboza Jr, who recently won the WBO Interim title and became the mandatory challenger after beating Jack Catterall in Manchester.
The card comes with plenty of backstory. Haney and Garcia fought in April 2024, with Garcia initially winning by points decision and dropping Haney multiple times. However, the result was later changed to a no contest when Garcia failed a drugs test. This led to a one-year suspension for Garcia, which expires just in time for this event.
Lopez enters the ring after two performances that didn't wow fans. He picked up victories over Steve Claggett and Jamaine Ortiz last summer, but they weren't his best showings.
The outcomes of these fights could set up some interesting matchups down the line. There's talk of Lopez potentially moving up to 147lbs to face IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis. Ennis will fight WBA titleholder Eimantas Stanionis in April 2025 at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City. The boxing world has already started making predictions about a potential Lopez-Ennis clash.
Another possibility is Lopez facing the winner of a potential Haney-Garcia rematch, depending on how things play out on May 2.
