Frank Bruno, the former WBC heavyweight champion, has hinted at a possible return to boxing at the age of 63. The British boxing legend expressed particular interest in a rematch with Tim Witherspoon.
Bruno, who hails from London, England, captured the WBC heavyweight title in September 1995 at Wembley Stadium. He defeated Oliver McCall by unanimous decision, achieving his career-long goal of becoming a world champion.
Before his triumph, Bruno had fallen short in previous world title attempts against Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis. His first shot at a world title came in July 1986 against Tim Witherspoon for the WBA heavyweight crown. Witherspoon won that fight by knockout in the 11th round.
Now, almost 40 years later, Bruno wants another crack at Witherspoon. In an interview with The Telegraph, Bruno said:
"He was a nasty bit of work before he got into the ring. I don't know where he got his information from, people would tell him this and that. He beat me fair and square but I'd love to fight him again."
Bruno's last professional fight took place in March 1996 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. He lost his WBC title to Mike Tyson in a third-round knockout. It was Bruno's second fight against Tyson, having lost to him previously in 1989.
After the Tyson rematch, doctors advised Bruno to retire due to a recurring eye injury. This medical concern ended his professional career.
Despite the long layoff and his advanced age, Bruno seems eager to lace up the gloves once more. His interest in facing Witherspoon again shows the competitive fire still burns within the former champion.
While Bruno's desire to return to the ring might raise eyebrows, it's a testament to his enduring passion for the sport that made him a national hero in Britain. Whether this comeback materializes or remains a fleeting thought, Bruno's legacy as one of Britain's most beloved boxers is secure.
