James Toney, the former Super-Middleweight World Champion, isn't happy about being compared to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. He's made it clear that he thinks he's in a different league.
Canelo sits at the top of boxing right now in both skill and star power. He's been a pro since he was 15 years old and has fought 65 times, losing only twice. He's beaten big names like Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, John Ryder, Callum Smith, and Jaime Munguia. Right now, he's the super-middleweight champion, holding three of the four major belts.
Toney, on the other hand, was the IBF Super-Middleweight Champion from 1993 to 1994. He defended his title three times before losing to Roy Jones Jr. Over his career, Toney fought 92 times, winning 77 and losing 10. He's known for never being stopped inside the distance and for his tough, defensive style.
Some people have been comparing Toney and Canelo because of their elite defense and toughness. But Toney's not having it. In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, he said:
"Come see me. I keep on seeing my name, comparing James Toney to Canelo. There is no comparison. There is none. I'm up here, Canelo's down there. Period. Who was more skill than me? No-one but Sugar Ray Robinson. We on top. Wanna know why? Only the best fighters come from where? Detroit."
This isn't the first time Toney's talked about Canelo. He's even threatened to come back to boxing to 'destroy' him. He's also said Canelo wouldn't last two fights in his era.
While Toney's busy talking, Canelo's getting ready for his next fight. He's set to face Edgar Berlanga on September 14. Berlanga's made a big claim, saying he'll be the first to knock Canelo down. We'll have to wait and see if he can back up his words.
